Assessing Working Scientifically in KS1 Science

primary science assessment assessing primary science primary science In moving away from levels, it became a lot harder to assess Key Stage 1 science; the unrelated nature of the different sections of the curriculum means it is difficult to decide if a child is making progress.  Add to that the complexity of the working scientifically module and the possible lack of confidence from staff, and soon you can have an uphill struggle on your hands.  In response to this many schools have been using schemes of work that they can use to assess the children’s progress – a straight forward answer to the problem, but one that turns science into a tick box exercise for the children and the staff.  However, working scientifically doesn’t fit so well into a tick box, it is not a fact to remember but a way of thinking – how do we assess this?

KS1 Science Assessment Training

This Primary Practicals short course offers primary science assessment training which examines working scientifically across reception and KS1, and looks at how best to incorporate this into the science teaching in your school.  Using tried and tested strategies for assessing primary science, the simple science assessment techniques shared in this course will save time and give teachers the confidence they need to deliver fantastic science lessons.  This course works on its own, but staff will benefit from having a good understanding of practical work in science or having attended our short course on Practical Work.

The content of this Assessing Working Scientifically course covers:

  • Working Scientifically – what does it look like in practice?
  • Planning lessons to include Working Scientifically.
  • Helping children make progress in scientific thinking.
  • Data, graphs and beyond – assessment of their understanding.

This course would be ideal for anyone that assesses the progress in Primary School Science with a focus on Key Stage 1, no matter what scheme of work is being followed.  It provides a background in different ways to approach both the teaching and assessment of practical work and would therefore be of benefit to teaching staff.  If this course is to be delivered in house we can tailor the content to fit alongside existing schemes of work or for a specific key stage or year.  This couse can be combined with the KS2 version if required.

Course Cost: £50 per person
